How Dialysis functions
Dialysis is used to clean wastes from your blood. It replaces some of the functions of the kidney through diffusion (waste removal) and ultrafiltration (fluid removal). In dialysis, a semi-permeable membrane allowing only some small substances to pass through is placed between the blood and the dialysis solution.
There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Hemodialysis (HD) is a dialysis treatment in which blood is treated by passing it through an artificial kidney. This is done by having plastic tubes connecting you to a dialysis machine.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the peritoneum inside the body as the semi-permeable membrane to filter the blood, thus offering more flexibility by allowing patients to dialyze wherever they want----be it at home or at work. It may also be performed at night.
